Default Visit to Alto

On Saturday we visited Alto near Stellenbosch.

The tasting area is nice and the lady who assisted us was very friendly and helpful.

We tasted their three wines, i.e Rouge 2007, Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 and Shiraz 2005 and I also had a taste of their Alto Port 2006. The three red wines were very nice and my own taste would be for the Rouge 2007, but a bit expensive for us. A wine I would not mind having in my collection.

It was interesting to me that they produce the port from the Shiraz grapes. My wife does not like the sweetness of the wine, but a wine I would for sure sip in bed during winter.

The farm has a very nice view and easy to see Table Mountain from there.

My own impression is that they do not do enough to create a warm atmosphere. The buildings and garden lean themselves to more. It is not a matter of being negative but I have seen places where more is done. Other people might have a different opinion.

Hi Faan

I recently discovered a bottle of Alto Rouge (2000 I think). It was a corporate gift celebrating the new Millenium. Being branded it didn't look too impressive.
But your comment made me look at it with different eyes.

Maybe I should eye it with more respect before I consume it soon!

Just visited their website , they seem to be huge on port. and yes as you said port from shiraz is really amusing but in south africa they have to do the best with what they have. since south africa does not have same weather or soil as portugal.
