Feiteiras Vineyards Verdehlo 2009 - My Wine for July 2010
Portuguese seafood
This small operation in the village of Bot Rivier near Hermanus is owned by the De Andrade family that is originally from Madeira. They still use the traditional Madeiran methods of winemaking. All their wines have a distinct cool climate feel to it that is due to the influence from the nearby ocean at Walker Bay. Together with the cool climate character you also find a warm hearted Portuguese feel to the wines and the names of the wines. Verdelho is a native white variety to Portugal and makes lovely fruity, young wines.
The wine shows prominent white fruit and tropical flavours and has a fresh acidity that stays in your mouth together with the fruit. It is an ideal seafood and summertime wine. There is only half a hectare planted of this on the farm.
It sells at R72.00 a bottle. Grab it for the summer before it runs out.
I have always found portuguese wines truly remarkable, their superb port wines, different grapes with names i never heard before and yes absolutely fantastic taste.
The Feiteiras Cabernet Sauvignan 2007 is one of the best red wines I have ever tasted. It is smooth, very slightly sweet but delicious enough to forget you have to stop drinking it at some stage.
I highly recommend it and it retails for about R73 per bottle.
